Wisdom Teeth Treatment in Salt Lake City by Drs. Stohl
Wisdom teeth are molars that develop in the each quadrant of your mouth; upper, lower, right and left. Given it’s nickname “wisdom teeth,” these molars are the last set of three that grow and set in between the ages of 17 and 25, when usually people tend to become wiser. The molars are no different than any other tooth. However, as they are typically the last teeth to develop into the mouth, it can cause improper growth, creating issues with proper bite and having healthy gum tissue surrounding the molars.
When To Remove Your Wisdom Teeth
Each person may experience the following symptoms differently, however these may be an indication that the wisdom teeth have improperly developed and should be removed before your teeth become impacted. In other words, there is no more room in your mouth for the molars to grow.
- Pain or jaw stiffness surrounding the impacted tooth
- Pain from the tooth growing in at an angle causing irritation against your cheek, tongue, or top/bottom of your mouth
- An infected swelling of the gum tissue where the tooth has erupted from
- Crowding of other teeth
- Tooth decay or gum disease due to the lack of cleaning caused by impaction
It’s recommended to remove wisdom teeth before they are fully developed early on in prevention to eliminate problems, such as an impacted tooth that destroys the second molar.
Wisdom tooth extraction can be performed under local anesthesia, carefully removing the connective tissue between the tooth and the bone and removing the tooth. Extractions can be performed under local anesthesia.
